In its repertoire requirement, the ‘Franz Schubert and Modern Music’ string quartet competition places Franz Schubert’s works in a context spanning epochs. Consequently, on the one hand, the composer is experienced as a representative of certain musical traditions who embarked on new paths with respect to both sound and harmony, developing a very personal emotive language on the way. On the other hand it is important to highlight that Schubert has influenced numerous composers through till the present day.

Our competition strives to discover young stringquartet ensembles from all over the world and make an important contribution to their careers. At the same time, we expect participating ensembles to express their own vision and ideas in the interpretation of the works.

With this in mind, we look forward to welcoming very many exciting and inspiring participants.
