Born in Winterthur, Switzerland. Studies at Juilliard School in New York with Leonard Rose and Yehuda Hanani, and later with Maurice Gendron in Paris. In 1984 he founded the Carmina Quartett together with fellow students. Chamber music courses with Sandor Végh, the LaSalle Quartet and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The Carmina Quartett was first prize winner of several international competitions. Recordings by the quartet for Denon received many awards, among others the „Gramophone Award“ and the „Grand Prix du Disque“. Extended concert tours at all important music centres across Europe, the USA and Japan.
Regular projects with Mitsuko Uchida, Sabine Meyer, Olaf Bär and Wolfgang Holzmair.
Lectures at the Zurich University of the Arts. Since 2004 professor for chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. Stephan Goerner has been a jury member in international competitions and lecturer of master classes throughout Europe and Asia.
