Born in Basle in 1950. Organ studies completed with diploma in 1978, doctorate in musicology in 1982. Between 1982 and 1988 head of music collection at Basle University Library. Music critic since 1972 – first as a freelance journalist at the “National-Zeitung“ which was renamed into “Basler Zeitung“ in 1977, and since 1989 Senior Music Critic and Feature Editor of the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung“. Lecturer at the universities of Basle, Bern, Zurich and at Zurich-Winterthur College. Jury member at competitions such as “Franz Schubert and Modern Music“ Graz, “Musikpreis Salzburg“, “Crédit Suisse Group Young Artist Award“ and “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik“. In 1990 he was awarded the “Kritikerpreis des ‘steirischen herbst‘ Graz“, in 1999 the “Anerkennungsprämie der UBS-Kulturstiftung Zürich“, in 2001 the “Kritikpreis der Landeshauptstadt Salzburg“.
