Hooshyar Khayam, Great Britain/Iran
He was born in the UK. Today, he is one of the new generation of composers in Iran who are also performers ("composer-performers"). He has a PhD in composition from the University of Cincinnatti (College Conservatory of Music) and now works as assistant professor in the composition department at the University of Art in Tehran.
He is active in various genres of music, from classical piano concert to ethno music, and collaborates with artists such as Hossein Alizadeh and Massoud Shaari. His works include music for solo piano (Fourth Sonata, 2009), for large symphonic ensembles (piano concerto, 2003) or string orchestra (concert for cello and string orchestra, 2009) to improvisational genres ("All Of You" with Amir Eslami 2010), Vocal works (with Aida Shirazi, Tara Tiba and Farzaneh Joorabchi) and arrangements or revisions of traditional music from the Middle East.
He has won the "People's Choice" award for "Best Album of The Year" for "Tatari", and his second album "Thousand Acacias" with "Hermes Records" has been classified as one of the company's top five bestsellers.
