Christine Lemke-Matwey studied German language and literature, philosophy, dramatics and musicology in Cologne and Munich and initially worked at theatres (among others in Bonn and Hamburg/Germany, Vienna and Bregenz/Austria as well as Chur/Switzerland). Since the mid-nineties she has been working as a journalist, first for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, later for the Berliner Tagesspiegel. Since 2012 she is responsible for the feature articles in the newspaper ZEIT and moved to Hamburg where she has been holding the position of Deputy Department Head since 2018.
She has staged an opera, written two libretti and teaches at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), the Bavarian Theatre Academy and the Universities in Zurich/Switzerland and Dortmund/Germany. “Mein Leben mit Wagner” (transl. ‘my life with Wagner’), by Christian Thielemann and co-authored by Christine Lemke-Matwey, was published in 2012 by C.H. Beck. In 2019, Lemke-Matweys 26-part series on Franz Schubert was broadcast on rbb Kulturradio.
