The International Chamber Music Competition „Franz Schubert and Modern Music“(FS&MM) was established by the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in 1989. Since then, every three years Graz becomes a hub for young musicians from all over the world who are competing here in front of an international, high-caliber jury. The categories are: Duo for Voice and Piano (Lied), Piano Trio, and String Quartet.
FS&MM is not a competition like any other. Right from the start, it was about bringing Schubert’s chamber music into relation with both new and the latest works for the corresponding lineup. With around € 100,000 prize money, the FS&MM is one of the highest-paying music competitions. Furthermore, with the composition competitions as well as commissioned works the expansion of the chamber music repertoire gets actively promoted.
