Composition Competition for Duo for Voice and Piano (Lied) – 1st Prize for the composition „Den gelben Astern ein Lied“ (2017) by Sehyung (Sergej) Kim
Sehyung (Sergey) Kim was born in 1987 in Almaty (Kazakhstan). He is a graduate of the Moscow State Conservatory´s Composition Department. In the period from 2011 to 2012, he received private lessons in composition from Dmitri Kourliandski. Since 2013 he is a master´s candidate in music composition under Professor Beat Furrer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz.
Sehyung has been awarded prizes at international competitions such as “DuoSolo” (USA, 2010), “Step to the left” (Russia, 2012), “de la ville de Boulogne-Billancourt” (France, 2014), “Franz Schubert und die Musik der Moderne” (Austria, 2017), and the “7th Johann Joseph Fux Opera Composition Competition” (Austria, 2018).
He was a participant of the 45th and 47th International Summer Courses in Darmstadt (2010 and 2014), the 2nd, 4th and 5th International Academy of Young Composers in Tchaikovsky City (2012, 2014, and 2015), the 8th International Ensemble and Composers Academy for Contemporary Music “Impuls” in Graz (2013), and the 2nd Ukrainian Biennale for New Music in Kiev (2013).
In 2013, he was chosen as the „composer in residence“ of the GAM-ensemble in Moscow. In September of the same year, he was invited as a guest lector at the Kazakh National Conservatory in Kazakhstan. In 2015, he received the “Musikförderungspreis” of the City of Graz.
Commissions from festivals „impuls“ (2014), 46th international summer courses in Darmstadt (2014), „International Music Bridge and Cultural Association Austria“ (2016), ORF and „Jeunesse Austria“ (2017), and etc. His music has been performed by ensembles such as the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, dissonArt Ensemble, Klangforum Wien, Schallfeld Ensemble, Ensemble Batida, and Ensemble Geori. In addition, his works are published by Re: Musik (Russia).

The Composition Competition for the category Duo for Voice and Piano (Lied) was scheduled for the first time in 2017, composers of all Austrian universities and conservatories were eligible to participate and many of them took up the challenge to melodize one of over 50 poems by the German-speaking poetess Selma Merbaum (1924-1942).
The prize-winning composition „Den gelben Astern ein Lied“ (2017) („A Song for the Yellow Asters“) was programmed as a compulsory piece for the first round. It was performed by all participating lied duos, which means over 50 times in the first round of the 10th International Competition „Franz Schubert and Modern Music“.
