The German-Swiss Amaryllis Quartet studied with Walter Levin (first violinist of the LaSalle Quartet) in Basle. Since 2007 they have been studying with the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne.
The Amaryllis Quartet performs regularly in concert series and at festivals in Germany, Switzerland and many other European countries, including appearances in the Liederhalle in Stuttgart and at the Lucerne Festival in 2005 as well as concerts at the NDR, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival and the Società del Quartetto di Milano. The Amaryllis Quartet also founded their own concert series in the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. 1st prize in the Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition in the Netherlands, prizewinner of “Premio Paolo Borciani“-Competition 2008 and of the International String Quartet Competition Tromp in Eindhoven, Netherlands 2008.
Master classes with the Artemis Quartet and concerts together with artists such as Barbara Westphal, Albrecht Breuninger, Francois Benda, Dimitri Ashkenazy and actor Christoph Bantzer. Grant of “Deutscher Musikrat“ 2009. The rediscovery of forgotten masterpieces is an another priority for the members of the young quartet. They have a special interest in the Hungarian composer Géza Frid, a student of Bartók. The quartet made the world premiere recording of his string quartets, released in 2008 by Covello Classics.
Gustav Frielinghaus, Violin
Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1978. 1999-2003 studies with Igor Ozim. Before that, studies with Winfried Rüssmann in Hamburg. Studies with Thomas Brandis in Lübeck; diploma in 2007. Concertmaster in opera productions and symphony concerts. Appearances as a soloist with various international youth orchestras in Asia and the USA as well as the Biel Symphony Orchestra, Switzerland.
Magdalena Wirth, Violin
Born in Schwetzingen, Germany, in 1983. Studies with Jörg Hofmann (2002-2004), since 2004 with Albrecht Breuninger. Prizewinner in the competition “Jugend musiziert“. Concert tours to Australia and Canada as concertmaster of various youth orchestras. Appearances, among others, as a soloist with the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester as well as at the Lucerne Academy under Pierre Boulez. Master classes with the Mandelring Quartet.
Lena Eckels, Viola
Born in Detmold, Germany, in 1982. Since 2001 studies with Barbara Westphal. 1st prize in the competition “Jugend musiziert“ on the national level. Prize for Classical Music presented by the city of Münster and the WDR. Award of the Society of Westphalian Cultural Development, first-prizewinner in the Brahms Competition in Pörtschach. Master classes with Nobuko Imai, James Dunham and Heidi Castleman.
Yves Sandoz, Violoncello
Born in Solothurn, Switzerland, in 1980. 2000-2005 studies with Reinhard Latzko, since 2005 with Gustav Rivinius. Master classes with Monique Bartels, Christophe Coin, Wen-Sinn Yang and Martin Zeller. Principal cellist of the Swiss Youth Symphony Orchestra; appearances as a soloist with various Swiss orchestras. Prizewinner in the Swiss Chamber Music Competition, Annual Prize of the Canton of Solothurn.
