After getting degrees in Violin, Musicology and Law in Madrid, he worked as music producer at the classical music station of Spanish National Radio, and later on as artistic director of the RTVE Symphony Orchestra. In 1990 he was appointed Head of Programmes and Deputy Head of Music, and he was an active member of the Serious Music Working Party of the European Broadcasting Union in Geneva. He coordinated the so-called “Columbus-Day” on 13 October 1992, consisting of eleven live broadcasts from as many concerts taking place in European and American countries, including the first international broadcasts ever from concerts in México City and Buenos Aires (Teatro Colón). He was Artistic Director of the Liceo de Cámara (2006-2014) at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid. In 1997 he worked as Head of Publications at the Teatro Real in Madrid.

He is very active as a writer, lecturer and translator on music. He was the curator of the exhibition celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid. Since 2015 he is the chief music critic of El País, the best-read newspaper in Spanish in the world. He is also a regular translator for the opera broadcasts to cinemas from the Royal Opera House and the English National Opera in London, and also translates the Spanish website of Berliner Philharmoniker’s Digital Concert Hall. He has translated many opera libretti and Lieder, released by labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, EMI, Warner, Opus Arte, C Major, Bel Air, Euroarts, Sony, Idéale Audience, etc.

He has also translated many books into Spanish, among others The Rest is Noise and Listen to This (Alex Ross), Johann Sebastian Bach. Ein verpflichtendes Erbe (Paul Hindemith), Piano Notes (Charles Rosen), Johann Sebastian Bach. Music in the Castle of Heaven (John Eliot Gardiner), Biographische Notizen über Joseph Haydn (Georg August Griesinger), and Winterreise. Anatomy of an Obsession (Ian Bostridge). He also translates and write programme notes on a regular basis for the “Ciclo de Lied” (Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid).

Since 2015 he is responsible for the programming of the Beethoven-Woche at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn.
