The international competition "Franz Schubert and Modern Music" is a chamber music competition which has been established by the University of Arts Graz in 1989. Every three years Graz becomes a hub for almost two hundred young musicians from all over the world who are competing here in front of an international jury. This provides the young talents with the opportunity for a high-quality assessment of their skills at the highest level within an international context.

This department is in charge of the preparation of this event which includes also the organization of an international competition for composition in a predefined category. In addition, it is responsible to run the competition and to provide for academic post-processing to ensure intramural reflection and interaction on teaching. The department is in direct contact with the competition committee which is in charge of artistic matters. Moreover, it establishes and maintains contact to concert promoters to open up possibilities for the prize-winners to perform both national and international concerts.

On an international level, the competition has been embedded since 1990 in the "World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC)" which, in turn is member of the "Federation of the International Music Council" (UNESCO, Paris). WFIMC pursues the goal to promote young musicians and to provide them with support when building their international career. Since April 2009, the competition "Franz Schubert and Modern Music" has been member in the committee of the WFIMC.
