He studied piano at the Zurich Conservatory and obtained a teaching and concert diploma. He has been active as a music teacher and administrator since 1973 (among others, he was President of the Swiss Music School Conference 2003-2006, Rector of the Zurich Music and Theater School 2003-2007 and President of Suisseculture 2006-2008). He has written over a hundred theater music scores for German-speaking audiences, as well as Chansons, Lieder and choral pieces, and has composed for the following Libretti: „Stichtag“, „Aufstand der Schwingbesen“ (both by Thomas Hürlimann) and „Judas Passion“ (text by Jürg Jegge). He teaches Liedgestaltung in the Music Department of the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste and in European master classes He has two daughters, a grand-daughter and a grand-son.
He became member of The Swiss Science and Technology Council (SSTC) in 2008.
